The project stems from a critical analysis of the existing nursing home and its relationship with the urban and landscape context of Morbio.

The proposal is based on three main principles: preserving the building and its garden as an expression of the permanence of memory and collective identity; renovating the existing structure as an architecturally and environmentally sustainable choice; and enhancing the front garden as an opportunity to transform it into a public park capable of strengthening the connection between the nursing home and the urban core, currently separated by the cantonal road.

The decision to preserve and renovate the building, rather than demolish it and rebuild it from scratch, makes it possible to reduce waste production, limit new excavations and the use of reinforced concrete, retain the identity of the place, and improve the relationship between the garden and the surrounding urban fabric. The renovated building maintains the existing layout, adapting it to new functional requirements through the enlargement of rooms, the refurbishment of bathrooms, the complete redesign of the façade with high energy performance, the introduction of new stairwells and elevators, and a lightweight roof structure that integrates climate-related functions and shared spaces. The renovation is designed to be carried out in phases, allowing the facility to remain in operation while minimizing the relocation of residents.

In parallel, an underground elliptical spiral parking structure is planned, providing 135 parking spaces plus 15 service spaces, with flexible access points from the cantonal road and a direct connection to the nursing home.

The form of the parking structure allows for future expansion and generates new access routes to the garden.

The existing garden becomes the central element of the project: expanded, made permeable and accessible through inclusive pathways, it is transformed into a public park open to the community, a place for intergenerational encounters and a new urban promenade integrated into the landscape and the urban core of Morbio.
